Hunter Ballew is a legacy-focused leader who has coached thousands of entrepreneurs and has a reach into multiple industries, including software, roofing and solar, live events, and personal development. He has led many retreats and conferences, consulted for businesses, and spoke at events with notable figures, Ed Mylett, Tim Tebow, John C. Maxwell, Iron Cowboy, Mike Tyson, and more. He has also coached thousands of entrepreneurs and has helped lead companies doing hundreds of millions of dollars collectively including the members of a mastermind he founded, Revolt.
But he didn’t start off with all of this experience. Hunter went into the United States Marine Corps straight out of high school and later worked full-time as a Firefighter and EMT, before pursuing his entrepreneurial dreams full-time.
One of his proudest accomplishments is writing a Wall Street Journal #1 Bestseller, Make It Count, with the foreword written by John C Maxwell. With his second book, he teaches readers how to catapult their business success by connecting personal and professional growth – with an emphasis on honing vital leadership skills.
In this feature, Hunter shares his inspiration, process, and more in Unlocking 8 Figures, his latest nonfiction business book.
Book Title: Unlocking 8 Figures: The Roadmap To $10M
Genre: Business, money, leadership, entrepreneurship
Website: The Revolt
What inspired you to write about finances and leadership?
My inspiration is my own journey. I went from being a firefighter searching for more in life, to building multiple eight-figure businesses. Along the way, I realized that scaling a business isn’t just about strategies, systems, or hard work—it’s about leadership.
The growth of your business is directly tied to your growth as a leader, and that’s a truth I’ve learned through my successes and, more importantly, my failures.
My experiences in the Marine Corps and fire service shaped my understanding of leadership, often by showing me what not to do. I saw leaders who demanded respect without earning it, and those experiences drove me to become the kind of leader people actually want to follow.
That evolution in my leadership style has been the foundation of my success, and I wanted to share that with others who are navigating the challenges of scaling their businesses.
Ultimately, I wrote this book because I know what’s possible when you commit to both personal growth and business growth. I grew up in a small town, barely made it out of high school, and faced more failures than I can count. But by investing in myself and refusing to quit, I’ve been able to achieve things I once thought were out of reach.
If my story can inspire others to push past their own doubts and build the kind of businesses—and lives—they dream of, then this book has served its purpose.
Why was now the right time to publish this?
I felt this was a story that needed to be told and simply didn’t want to wait.
My first book, Wall Street Journal Bestseller Make It Count, focuses on personal growth and leaving a legacy—two things I’m deeply passionate about. But as I reflected on my journey and the lessons I’ve learned, I realized how intertwined personal growth and business growth really are.
You can’t scale a business to eight figures – or even beyond – without evolving as a person and a leader.
This book felt like the natural next step.
It’s a way to connect the dots between the personal and professional sides of growth. I wanted to show that building a successful business isn’t just about tactics or strategies; it’s about the mindset and leadership it takes to make it happen.
This was the moment when I knew it was time to share my story and the tools that have helped me succeed so others could do the same.:
Who should read this book today?
This book is a must-read for business owners ready to scale to 8 figures but feel stuck or unsure of how to bridge the gap.
And it’s for the leaders who have built something successfully but know there’s potential for so much more.
Whether you’re struggling to implement the right strategies, streamline systems, or develop the mindset needed for massive growth, this book provides the roadmap you’ve been looking for. If you’re ready to step into the next level of leadership and take your business to heights you’ve only dreamed of, this book is for you.
Can you share some of the takeaways someone might learn while reading Unlocking 8 Figures?
Of course! There’s a lot to take from this book, but these are three top learnings:
Why leadership transformation is key to scaling
Readers will learn that scaling a business to eight figures isn’t just about strategy or hard work, it’s about becoming the kind of leader who can handle that level of growth.
The book dives into traits like accountability, discipline, vision, and resilience, teaching readers how to develop these qualities in themselves and instill them in their teams.
How to use the practical roadmap and tools to eight figures
I worked hard to ensure this book provides not only actionable steps but also tools and frameworks to structure a business for success. From creating a clear organizational chart and defining roles to mastering sales, recruiting top talent, and implementing systems that drive scalability, it’s a no-fluff guide packed with exact steps to help readers build a business foundation to support explosive growth.
How to balance success with legacy
Readers will explore the importance of aligning their business goals with their core values and long-term legacy.
The book introduces exercises like Embedded, Defined, and The Six Bricks to help entrepreneurs identify what truly matters and build businesses that create lasting impact while maintaining balance in their personal lives.
Unlocking 8 Figures is not just about growing revenue; it’s about growing as a leader, using proven tools and strategies, and leaving a legacy that extends far beyond business.
Was the process for writing this book different from your first book?
The process of writing Unlocking 8 Figures was so much easier than writing my first book, Make It Count.
For one, I understood the process better this time around – how to organize my thoughts, structure the content, and get it all done without overcomplicating things.
Plus, this being a business book made it even more clear, because I already had a very clear path I wanted to walk people through.
I’ve been doing retreats and events for over five years now – dozens of them – and I used a similar outline for this book as I do for my events. That structure helped me organize everything in a way that felt natural and easy to follow. It was almost like running an event on paper, which made the whole process a lot more straightforward.
What was the hardest part about getting your expertise onto paper and into book form?
Definitely the editing!
Writing the first draft wasn’t too bad—I just got all my thoughts down. But going back through it, making sure it flowed and still sounded like me, that was tough.
I didn’t want this to come across as stiff or full of fluff.
I wanted it to feel like I was just talking to someone, like we were having a normal conversation. So, I spent a lot of time reworking things until it sounded like how I’d say it. It was frustrating at times, but it was worth it to make sure the book felt real.

What was your favorite part?
My two favorite parts of this whole process were probably the formatting and the launch of the book.
When it came to the book formatting step, there was something about seeing everything come together—the chapters laid out, the design finalized, and the flow of the book looking clean and professional.
It made all the work feel real, like, “Alright, this is actually happening.” There’s a lot of pride in seeing your ideas turned into something real like that.
Then there was the book launch. That’s always such an exciting time.
After spending so much time writing, editing, and tweaking, finally getting it out there for people to read is a huge moment. Seeing the reactions, hearing how it’s helping people, and watching the impact it’s starting to make – it’s honestly one of the most rewarding parts of the whole process.
Knowing that all the hours and effort were worth it because the book is out there making a difference is what it’s all about for me.
What’s next for you as an author?
The goal for the future with this book is simple: help more business owners scale their businesses to 8 figures.
I’ve seen firsthand how transformative it can be when entrepreneurs have the right tools, systems, and mindset to take their business to the next level. With this book, I want to reach even more people than I can through one-on-one conversations.
My plan is for this book to be a resource that business owners can turn to for real, actionable steps, no matter where they are on their journey.
The ultimate goal is to see more people achieving their version of success, building businesses they’re proud of, and creating a legacy that lasts.
