Let the Illustrator be in Control
This program is designed for the children's book writer with an "open mind". You have written a great children's book and it's time to have it illustrated. If you can picture yourself allowing the illustrator to illustrate, without you feeling the need to micro manage every tiny detail, this program is for you. All you need to do is supply the manuscript, indicating which text belongs on each page, and the illustrator will do the rest. The program is comprised of four basic steps. Each one of these steps is necessary to totally complete the project. The best part of our "Let the Illustrator be in Control" program is you can cancel at either of the first two stages and use what we have done to pursue another illustrator. In the end, you own the print ready PDF file that we print from.
Step 1: Look and Feel
Please supply your manuscript to Self Publishing, Inc.after breaking it down into either a twenty-four or thirty-two page format. It is recommended that you give us a description of what you want illustrated on each page (or each spread) as well as a style you like (cartoon-like, realistic, etc …) if you know. If you are not sure yet and you want to leave it up to the illustrator, that is fine. Select one page or one spread to have the illustrator do for the “Look and Feel.” Self Publishing, Inc. will return to you a pencil sketch of that page or spread. You have the choice of accepting or rejecting that pencil sketch. If you accept it, you move on and purchase Step Two, which is referred to as “Complete Pencils.” If you reject the example pencil sketch or have comments, these are conveyed to the illustrator. If the illustrator believes he can make the change, a revised pencil will be shown to you. If the illustrator feels he cannot accomplish the changes requested, you have the choice to purchase another “Look and Feel” with another Self Publishing, Inc. illustrator, or you may hire your own outside illustrator.
Step 2: Complete Pencils
When you accept the "Look and Feel" pencils, Step Two is purchased. Self Publishing will supply a complete set of pencil illustrations for the twenty-four or thirty-two pages in the book, based on the style of the "Look and Feel" pencils and following whatever descriptions you may have provided. The text is placed on these pages based on what you say should be on each page. Our pricing includes twelve illustrations for a twenty-four page book and sixteen illustrations for a thirty-two page book with no more than four characters. Additional illustrations are available at an extra fee. (Now is a good time to make sure that what you have is what you want. Remember to include a title page and copyright page in your page count.) If you accept these pencils, they are ready to move on to Step Three ("Coloring and Finalization") and Step Four ("Cover Design"). If you reject these drawings, you have a choice of either having the illustrator make corrections to the drawings at an agreed price, or you may cancel the job completely and use the pencils as a guide in finding a different illustrator. If you choose not to proceed, you will owe nothing further to Self Publishing.
Price for Step 2: Complete Pencils (24 pages): $490.00
Price for Step 2: Complete Pencils (32 pages): $640.00
Step 3: Coloring and Finalization
This is the step where your book gets ready to print. All of the illustrations are colored and are prepared so they will reproduce on a digital or offset printing press. A sample spread will be shown to you for an approval prior to the illustrator doing the whole book. This keeps corrections to a minimum, as the palette and style of coloring are approved first. Corrections can be made at an agreed price.
Price for Step 3: Coloring and Finalization (24 pages): $1,400.00
Price for Step 3: Coloring and Finalization (32 pages): $1,700.00
Step 4: Cover Design
A good book cover will help sell books. From the full page pencils, you will select an illustration(s) (or part of one) for the front and back cover. With this selection you will give the illustrator all of the text for the cover (title, author on front and spine, and some copy on the back that may describe the story or be a bit about the author along with ISBN and bar code). The illustrator will show you a pencil for approval. Revisions are included in this price. If you reject what the illustrator has done and decide to have someone else do the cover, you will owe no further money to Self Publishing, Inc.for the cover.
