Do you ever feel like you’re hiding behind a “polished front” while an internal script of “not-enoughness” runs the show?

Many of us have grown so used to silencing our inner truth—to protect an image or gain approval—that we’ve lost touch with who we truly are. We wait for a permission slip to be ourselves that may never arrive.

In The Empowered Voice, leading voice empowerment coach Krystal Diaz reveals a transformative truth: your external voice is a direct mirror of your internal experience. If you’ve ever hesitated to speak up, struggled with self-doubt, or felt your throat tighten when it’s time to be heard, the problem isn’t just your technique—it’s your story.

This transformative book will take you from self-doubt to self-trust, because the most important conversation is the one you have with yourself. So, let’s talk about it.

Hey Krystal! Thanks for joining us. Can you start by telling us a little about yourself?

I am a Voice Empowerment Coach. Since beginning my coaching journey in 2008, I have delivered over 15,000 coaching sessions and built a thriving business helping individuals—from beginners to renowned pop stars, actors, influencers, entrepreneurs, executives, and industry leaders—unlock the power of their unique voices.

At the core of my work is my uniquely innovative approach to voice coaching, which seamlessly blends vocal technique with personal development in a way that is both practical and transformative. My Voicework methodology breaks new ground by addressing both the inner narratives that shape self-expression and the external vocal techniques that bring those expressions to life.

I believe that when people connect with their authentic voices, they can literally speak their passions into existence, align with their true selves, and gain the clarity to live purpose-driven lives.

I am dedicated to helping my clients express themselves authentically so they can inspire, connect, and create meaningful impact in every aspect of their lives.

Amazing! So what inspired you to write The Empowered Voice?

Growing up in a family of accomplished musicians and singers in Hong Kong, I assumed singing was my calling too. But every time I stepped on stage, my throat tightened, my voice trembled, and no matter how the audience responded, I heard only one thing inside my head: not good enough. Over time, I learned to bury those feelings and keep up appearances, because I’d been taught: the show must go on.

Eventually, I stepped away from singing and turned to studying film and English — drawn to storytelling as a way to understand how we make meaning of our experiences. That foundation never left me. When life led me back to the music world as a vocal coach, I brought that same storytelling curiosity with me, and it led somewhere unexpected.

Everything shifted with one student. She had a habit of tightening her throat on high notes and speaking in a soft, almost apologetic tone. When I finally asked her, “Are there times in life when you hold yourself back from speaking your mind?” she answered without hesitation: “All the time.” That moment marked the beginning of a far deeper coaching journey—and confirmed what I had been slowly coming to understand: the voice is a bridge between our inner world and the way we show up outwardly. Vocal struggles are rarely just about technique—they are about the story we’re telling ourselves.
That realization sent me deep into psychology, personal development, and life coaching—and ultimately inspired everything in this book.

I wrote The Empowered Voice because I lived it. I know what it feels like to silence yourself to meet expectations, to grind without purpose, and to one day sit alone in spite of all your achievements, wondering, “Is this really it?”

This book is the roadmap I wish I’d had—and the one I now share with the thousands of clients who’ve trusted me with their voices and their stories.

Why was now the right time in your career to share this story?

For years, my coaching approach had been evolving, particularly with my long-standing students—moving beyond technique and into the beliefs, fears, and inner narratives that were shaping their external voices.

By the end of 2023, I decided to formalize it. I launched the Resonate Voice Coaching Program—a hybrid approach that brought together vocal work and personal development in the way I had been naturally moving toward for years. What surprised me was the response. By early 2024, my available spots had filled with very little advertising on my part. That was the moment I knew this work was needed—and that it wasn’t just relevant to singers. It could help anyone who wanted to use their voice in a bigger way.

I decided to write the book because I wanted to develop and formalize the message so that more people could access it.

Who would you say must read this book?

The Empowered Voice is for anyone who has ever felt the gap between who they are on the inside and how they show up in the world. While the book draws from my background in vocal coaching, it is not just for singers or performers—it is for professionals who shrink in meetings, creatives who hold back their ideas, entrepreneurs who struggle to communicate their vision, and anyone who has silenced themselves to avoid conflict, seek approval, or maintain an image. If you have ever felt that self-doubt was stealing your words, that your inner critic was louder than your own truth, or that you were living a life shaped more by other people’s expectations than your own, this book was written for you.

What would you say the top 3 things are that someone will learn how to do from The Empowered Voice?

1. Recognize the patterns that are silencing you

Most of us have developed habits—perfectionism, people-pleasing, fear of judgment—that quietly mute our voices over time. This book helps you identify those patterns and understand where they came from, so you can begin to loosen their grip.

2. Quiet your inner critic and rewrite the story you’re telling yourself

Your external voice is a direct reflection of your internal experience. Through practical tools and research-backed guidance, you’ll learn to hear your inner critic for what it truly is—a conditioned narrative, not the truth—and replace it with one rooted in self-trust and authenticity.

3. Reconnect with your body, your purpose, and your authentic voice

Your body holds more wisdom than you might realize. You’ll learn to use its signals as a guide to clarity and confidence, while also defining the intrinsic purpose that gives your voice genuine meaning—so that when you speak, you’re expressing not just words, but who you truly are.

Can you tell us a bit about the writing process? How did you distill your expertise into a single book?

Writing this book was, without question, one of the most vulnerable and healing experiences of my life. I didn’t set out to write a personal memoir, but because the process of formally articulating these ideas—knowing they would be read by others—demanded a level of honesty I hadn’t fully anticipated. In many ways, sitting down to write felt exactly like stepping onto a stage for the first time: exposed, uncertain, and unable to hide behind anything.

The process was deeply self-reflective. There were days I was in flow and inspired, and there were days where I hated everything I had written. I went through cycles of clarity and doubt, of tearful self-realization followed by rewriting everything from scratch. It really felt like a long, drawn-out process of bringing something into the world that didn’t always want to come easily.

I also wanted the book to be research-backed, which meant reading studies, distilling information, cross-referencing sources, etc. That part genuinely felt like going back to school. Some days I really wanted to cut class, so it was an exercise in discipline, but ultimately rewarding. It was also very humbling as I realized how much there was to dive into and learn.

What was also interesting though, was how often I found myself experiencing in real time exactly what I was writing about—catching my own inner critic mid-sentence, noticing the stories I was telling myself about whether my words were good enough or whether anyone would want to read them.

Writing this book wasn’t just an act of documentation. It was its own journey playing out in real time.

What was one of the biggest challenges you faced during that process?

One of the biggest challenges was translating a coaching process that is deeply personalized and interactive into something structured enough to exist on a page. In one-on-one coaching, the process is guided by what the client brings to the session—it’s fluid, responsive, and rarely follows a fixed path. Capturing that same sense of flexibility and self-discovery in a book format, while still giving readers a clear and organized framework to follow, required a lot of intentional thinking about structure.

The second challenge was making sure the book spoke to non-singers. The bulk of my coaching experience—and many of the real-world examples I draw from—comes from my work with performing artists. Even as my coaching had been pivoting toward a broader audience in recent years, I was very aware that I needed to present these ideas in a way that anyone could see themselves in, regardless of whether they had ever set foot on a stage. What helped me bridge that gap was the research. Grounding the concepts in psychology, neuroscience and personal development gave the material a universal foundation—and ultimately reinforced what I had always believed: that we all have our own “stages,” and that the patterns showing up in my vocal students were the same patterns showing up in everyone.

What was one of the most rewarding parts of the process?

Getting to geek out! Writing this book gave me an excuse to dive deeper into neuroscience, psychology, and mindset—topics I have always been fascinated by but rarely had the dedicated time to explore at this level.

I also loved the process of formalizing the tools I had been using in my coaching sessions. Giving them structure, coming up with fun names and acronyms to make them more accessible and, hopefully, useful for others.

Other highlights are seeing the book cover for the first time, and holding the finished book in my hands. It’s a surreal experience seeing something that lived in your head for so long become a real, physical object you can hold.

Finally, sharing the experience with my two daughters—who had been asking about the process, cheering me on, and who told me they wanted to write their own books one day—and watching their faces when they saw it in print for the first time. That, more than anything, made the whole journey particularly fulfilling.

What are your plans for the future with this book and/or your business?

I see this book as the beginning, not the destination. I hope it can be the foundation for building something much larger—a movement around authentic self-expression and the power of the voice as a tool for personal transformation.

I plan to continue growing my podcast, using it as a platform to deepen these conversations and share stories from individuals who have reclaimed their voices and stepped more fully and courageously into who they are.
I am also building a community—one that extends beyond my existing singing community and opens the door to anyone who wants to use their voice in a bigger way. From there, I hope to develop mastermind groups that create space for deeper connection, collaboration, and mutual support as people move through their own journeys of self-discovery.

The world is shifting at a rapid pace. Old paradigms and belief systems that may have served people in the past are being questioned. People are asking harder questions about who they are, what they value, and how they want to show up. In that context, I believe conversations about identity, purpose and authentic expression are not just relevant, but necessary.

My intrinsic purpose is to use my voice to help others find theirs, so that they can share their unique gifts with the world. That ripple effect is ultimately what I am hoping this book, this community, and everything I am building will be in service of.

Any final inspiration for others looking to self-publish?
