2025 Overview

Executive summary

The US fiction market in 2025 told a story of stabilization after 2024's dramatic expansion — but inside that steadiness, the trends that matter accelerated. Romance kept outperforming every other print category. Science fiction posted its strongest growth in years. And a new aesthetic in reading — darker, more intense, more emotionally complex — became the defining consumer trend of the year.

US print book sales totaled 762.4 million units in 2025, a modest 0.3% increase over 2024 (Circana BookScan). Fiction carried that momentum: romance and science fiction led, while mass-market paperback continued its long structural decline. On the revenue side, total US publishing revenue reached $33.4 billion (AAP StatShot Annual), with adult book revenue slipping about 1.6% as readers shifted from trade paperback toward hardcover and audio.

Internationally, 11 of 17 territories reported fiction revenue growth in the first eight months of 2025 (NielsenIQ / GfK). Crime fiction was the global standout, led by Freida McFadden. And the defining cultural force remained BookTok: TikTok and NielsenIQ confirmed that more than 50 million books were sold across Europe in 2025 as a direct result of the platform's community, generating €800 million in revenue.

US audiobook sales in 2025, up 9% year over year — the format's fourth consecutive year of growth, and a lifeline for genres where print softened (Audio Publishers Association).

02 · Why this data matters

Fiction is not a monolith

The difference between a romance self-publisher's market and a literary fiction author's market is so large they barely share an industry. Aggregate publishing statistics erase those distinctions. This report makes them visible — with 2025 figures specific enough that authors, publishers, marketers, journalists, and booksellers can make decisions based on what actually happened last year, not what was trending three years ago.

If you're deciding what to write next, which format to prioritize, or where your readers actually are, the genre-level numbers below are the ones that should guide the call.

03 · 2025 market size

The fiction market: the total picture

A year of consolidation — still growing in units, slightly softer in revenue, with hardcover and audio delivering the real strength.

Total US publishing revenue across all categories reached $33.4 billion in 2025, up slightly over 2024, per the AAP StatShot Annual. Within adult books, revenue slipped about 1.6% — driven less by weak demand than by a shift in format mix. As readers moved away from trade paperback and toward hardcover and digital audio, the dollar-per-unit math changed.

The clearest casualty was the mass-market paperback. Once the backbone of genre fiction distribution, it fell to roughly 15 million units in 2025 — down from 21 million in 2024 and 131 million in 2004. For traditional romance and thriller distribution channels, that structural collapse is accelerating.

04 · Genre rankings

Where the print units went

Fiction surged where the darker, series-driven, community-fueled genres live — and softened where the lighter and shorter formats sit.

Fantasy (standalone)−8.7%24.1M units — romantasy is counted under romance

That fantasy decline deserves a footnote: Circana classifies romantasy titles under romance, not fantasy — so standalone fantasy fell on paper even as the underlying readership for romantic fantasy stayed enormous. Hardcover fiction, meanwhile, rose on the year, carried by premium and special editions.

05 · The subgenre story

Darker, more intense fiction is winning

Mid-year Circana data named the trend outright: readers are migrating toward darker, more emotionally charged subgenres.
Subgenre growth — year-to-date through mid-2025 (Circana)
SubgenreGrowth (YTD)What's driving it
Psychological thriller+29%Domestic suspense and unreliable narrators
Dark fantasy+23%Overlaps heavily with romantasy
Horror+13%Gothic and folk-horror revival
Romantic comedy / new adultdecliningLosing share to darker subgenres

Onyx Storm defined the ceiling of what fiction can do in 2025. Rebecca Yarros's romantasy sold roughly 1.3 million US print copies in its first week — the fastest-selling adult title in BookScan's 20-year history — and about 2.7 million across all US formats in week one, per its publisher. It finished the year as the #1 print book in the country. Across the full Empyrean series, the publisher reports more than 12 million all-format US copies sold.

The 2025 story isn't that fiction grew. It's that the kind of fiction readers want changed — toward darker, series-driven, community-discovered books.

06 · Where books are sold

Amazon still leads — but bookstores are thriving

The retail story of 2025 is a surprising one: physical bookstores kept opening at their fastest rate in decades.

Amazon continues to dominate online book retail. But the independent bookstore revival is now a durable, multi-year force. The American Booksellers Association's 2025 annual report showed 605 new bookstore businesses opening while only 65 closed — pushing ABA membership up 19% to 3,783 member locations. Barnes & Noble opened more new stores in 2025 than it had collectively from 2009 to 2019. Premium-priced romantasy special editions are part of what's driving readers back into stores.

07 · Indie vs. traditional

Self-publishing is where fiction’s volume lives

In 2025, self-published titles reached 3.5 million — and genre fiction is the indie ecosystem's core.

Bowker's 2025 ISBN data showed 3.5 million self-published titles in the US, up 38.7% from 2.5 million in 2024. Traditionally published titles grew a more modest 6.6%, to 642,242. Self-published works now make up roughly 84% of US ISBN-registered titles by volume.

Inside that ecosystem, fiction dominates. The Written Word Media 2025 Indie Author Survey (n=1,346) found active indie authors concentrated in exactly the genres driving the broader market:

08 · Author economics

What fiction authors actually earn

The income picture is one of extreme concentration — a small number of high earners, with genre and catalog size as the clearest predictors of where you land.

Earnings scale with catalog. Written Word Media's 2025 data found that indie authors with 25 or more books earned a median of about $3,000 per month, and 40% of that group topped $5,000 per month. At the other end, 44% of indie authors earned $100 per month or less from their writing. The most recent published cross-industry benchmark from the Alliance of Independent Authors put the median annual income for committed indie authors at $12,749, with romance and cozy mystery consistently producing the highest earners.

Two platform shifts shaped 2025 economics. The Kindle Unlimited Global Fund ran roughly $61.5–67.6 million per month through the year (December: $61.5 million), with page reads a major income source for romance, fantasy, and thriller authors. And effective June 10, 2025, Amazon KDP reduced royalty rates on print books priced below certain thresholds — a meaningful change for indie authors who rely on print-on-demand.

09 · Who reads what

The reading public in 2025

Most Americans read at least some of a book last year — but the median reader finished only a couple.

A Pew Research Center survey conducted in October 2025 found that 75% of US adults read all or part of at least one book in the past 12 months. A separate YouGov survey in December 2025 (n=2,203) sharpened the picture: 40% of Americans read zero books in 2025, the median reader finished just 2, and the average of 8 was pulled upward by the heavy readers — the 19% who read 10 or more and account for the bulk of books consumed. For fiction authors, the takeaway is blunt: a relatively small, devoted readership drives most of the market, and genre loyalty is how you reach them.

10 · BookTok & discovery

BookTok is now measurable — and massive

2025 produced the most precisely documented BookTok numbers in the platform's history.

As of 2025, #BookTok has surpassed 370 billion total views with more than 52 million video creations (Forbes / TikTok). But the number that reframed the conversation was commercial: TikTok, NielsenIQ BookData, and Media Control reported that more than 50 million books were sold across Europe in 2025 as a direct result of the BookTok community, generating €800 million in revenue. Germany alone accounted for €482 million of that total — 28 million books, more than double the 12 million sold in 2023.

Discovery is consolidating around the platform, too. In September 2025, Spotify partnered with TikTok to launch "Big on BookTok," a dedicated audiobook hub spotlighting viral titles — part of Spotify's push into audiobooks, where its overall catalog now exceeds 350,000 titles.

11 · International markets

Fiction is driving global growth

While nonfiction softened in most territories, fiction kept markets growing.

NielsenIQ and GfK Entertainment's interim report, released at the Frankfurt Book Fair in October 2025, showed 11 of 17 measured territories reporting revenue growth in the first eight months of the year. Crime fiction was the global standout: Freida McFadden was the year's dominant international author, with The Housemaid ranking #1 globally and five of her titles landing in the worldwide top 10. Science fiction, fantasy, and romantasy — led by Yarros's Empyrean series and Sarah J. Maas's ACOTAR — performed strongly across territories, and UK science fiction and fantasy posted record sales for the year.

12 · 2025 trajectory

Emerging and declining genres

The clearest signal of 2025: darker, more intense fiction is rising, and the lighter and shorter formats are losing ground.

Clearly growing: romantasy (triple-digit growth through mid-year), sports romance (the Heated Rivalry adaptation drove a 529% jump in NYC library e-book checkouts), dark romance, psychological thriller, dark fantasy, horror, dystopian fiction, science fiction, and graphic novels.

Softening or declining: standalone fantasy print (as romantasy is reclassified into romance), suspense/thriller print (offset by audio), YA print, trade paperback, mass-market paperback, and the lighter romance subgenres — romantic comedy and new adult — as readers migrate toward more intense stories.

Your fiction career starts with one book

The data is clear: devoted genre readers, a thriving indie ecosystem, and discovery engines like BookTok have made this one of the best times in history to write and publish fiction. The authors who win are the ones who actually finish and launch the book. That's exactly what we help you do.
