What inspired you to write about the healthcare industry?

I’ve always dreaded presidential election years. The attacks, insults, and divisive rhetoric dominate not only speeches and debates but also flood every aspect of daily life—online, on television, radio, in our mail, and across social media. Even more disheartening is how friends, neighbors, and countless strangers join in the hostility, labeling opponents as enemies and demanding extreme responses. Relationships strain, goodwill evaporates, and for months, personal rancor overshadows our communities.

But election years are just a symptom of a deeper, national problem. Today, political gridlock, media-fueled outrage, and polarizing debates over issues like immigration, gender, climate change, and gun legislation define our daily experience. Civil discourse has become rare, and people increasingly refuse to listen, let alone seek compromise.

I’ve witnessed this firsthand—not only as an American citizen, but as a participant. As a commercial litigation attorney, I work in one of the most contentious professions in the country. I’ve wielded words like weapons and have, at times, gone too far. While I’ve made amends where I could—and share some of those experiences in this book—some opportunities to reconcile have been lost forever.

But much like how we learn about addiction from those in recovery, or the value of peace from those who’ve known war, I believe my own experiences with conflict offer a perspective worth sharing. Unite or Fall is my effort to help others recognize the dangers of division, the critical importance of unity, and practical ways we can work toward personal and national healing—even if this message reaches just a few readers.

Why did you feel now was the right time to publish this book?

In May 2022, I had a conversation with a former federal circuit court judge about the deep, troubling problem we face as a nation—our inability to disagree without attacking or demonizing those with opposing views. His insights, along with additional resources he shared, reinforced what I had already been thinking. It became clear that if I was ever going to write this book, now was the time. The need for unity—and for tools to help us disagree constructively—has never been more urgent.

Who do you believe will benefit most from reading Unite or Fall?

This book is for adults across the United States who are frustrated by the constant contention, deep divisions, and dysfunction we see—not only in our federal government but in our daily interactions with each other. It’s for those who feel disheartened by the erosion of our supporting institutions and personal relationships, and who are concerned by the growing anger and hostility between people in this country. If you believe we can—and must—find a better way forward, this book is for you.

What did the process of writing this book look like for you?

Balancing my legal career while writing this book was no small task. I had to scale my legal work down to nearly one-third of my usual workload to give this project the attention it deserved. For almost a year, I poured myself into drafting Unite or Fall with sincere, heartfelt focus. That was only the beginning—the writing was followed by more than a year of relentless editing, formatting, and preparation to finally bring this book to life. It’s been one of the most challenging, yet fulfilling, projects I’ve ever taken on.

What was the hardest part of this process for you?

The hardest part was stepping back from a significant portion of my paid work, without any guarantee that this project would succeed or resonate with anyone beyond myself.

It required a leap of faith—investing so much time and energy into something with no certainty of the outcome. But I believed the message was worth the risk.

And what was your favorite part about writing a book?

What I enjoyed most was the opportunity to gain deep insights into the roots of our divisions—and to express practical, meaningful ways we can work toward unity and peace. The process allowed me to reflect, research, and articulate ideas that I believe can make a real difference, both personally and nationally.

What are your plans for the future—for both you and your book?

My primary goal is to get this book into the hands of as many people as possible. The message of unity and practical solutions is something I believe we desperately need. If there are opportunities to speak about these ideas, whether through events, talks, or discussions, I would be more than happy to do so. I believe conversations like these can spark real change.
