Hello and welcome to RJ Communications, the home of www.selfpublishing.com where over 100 million books have been printed for thousands of satisfied publishers, large and small. At RJ Communications, we help authors become publishers and success is measured in customer satisfaction.
I begin every publishing course I teach with the phrase, “Writing is a love and publishing is a business”. Just as you wouldn’t dream of opening an auto repair shop without learning about automobiles, you shouldn’t think, for a second, that you are going to be a successful self publisher without first learning about the publishing industry. To think otherwise, would be foolish. A quick Google search under the keyword “self publishing” produces a virtual minefield of vanity presses that must be navigated unless you have money to burn. At SelfPublishing.com we give you all the tools needed to help you become a successful publisher.
Publishing consists of four major steps. You are at step one, which is the perfect place to be. Step one is “Education”. This is where you are going to learn as much as you can about what lies ahead. Our book, Publishing Basics – A Guide for the Small Press and Independent Self-Publisher will help get you started. You can either order it through the www.JustBookz.com bookstore or send me an email with your address and I will mail you a copy for free. You should also spend some time at www.publishingbasics.com and read the current newsletter as well as prior issues. They all contain valuable information that will aid you in your publishing effort.
Step 2 is Preparation - This is where you register with RR Bowker and purchase your ISBN’s which identify you as the publisher. While you are at this stage it is strongly suggested that you let us perform an Editorial Analysis on your manuscript. This “no hold barred” analysis will help you determine exactly where your book fits into the marketplace and exactly what is needed to get your manuscript up to “snuff” to compete. Upon completion of this step, your manuscript will either be edited or be ready for book design. Book Design entails formatting text into a professional page layout and having your cover designed.
Step 3 is Book Printing. Successful completion of this step is going to ultimately determine whether your project is a financial success or not. Filling your garage with books is not the goal. Having you print a reasonable quantity which will lead to “sell through” and reprint is the goal. Online “Instant” pricing is available for many different sizes and quantities enabling you to find the “perfect specs”.
Step 4 is Marketing. If you have properly completed the education phase, you will know that there is no magic organization that is going to jump out and sell your book. If your book is going to sell, it is going to be because you sold it. Don’t let anyone fool you into thinking that it works any other way. Multiple book marketing programs are available through selfpublishing.com to aid you in the sales and marketing of your book.
Are you up to the task? If your answer is yes, you’ve come to the right place. Let’s get started. All of us here at RJ Communications look forward to working with you and being a part of your success story.
Thanks
Ron Pramschufer
